    Who is a ParaGrafix™ user?

ParaGrafix is a non-programming, "point and click" development environment, requiring no programming skills on the part of the user-developer. Anyone who is comfortable using software should be able to use ParaGrafix effectively. Ideally, a ParaGrafix developer should be well versed in the products you sell (or has ready access to other experts) and be analytical and problem-solving in disposition. If drawings and graphics are important to the application, being familiar with CAD or other graphics packages such as Corel is a big asset. For authoring rules, constraints, and expressions, experience with Excel or 1-2-3 helps as well. The most important point is that ParaGrafix application developers do not have to be software programmers.

How long does it take to get up to speed with ParaGrafix?

Two days of training by Quantara staff is all that it takes for most users. ParaGrafix also has a six-hour "Getting Started and Tutorial" module that some users have followed to teach themselves.

    What is Frontline Software?

Frontline is the runtime version of ParaGrafix. It is generally used by sales, estimating and order entry staff to design or configure products and pricing. These users cannot modify any rules, data, or graphics that the ParaGrafix developer does not want them to modify. Frontline can be used stand-alone on workstations or notebooks and can be sent out on CD-ROM or diskettes to dealers, agents, suppliers, etc.
    Back to Questions

How do we transfer new or upgraded applications to Frontline users?

All you need to do is copy the project files authored or modified by ParaGrafix onto the client(s) where Frontline is installed.

How long does it take to develop applications in ParaGrafix?

This very much depends on the complexity of your products. Some applications can be deployed in a matter of days. Others may take a several weeks. However, industry experts have said that applications done with ParaGrafix can be completed and tested in one-tenth the time it takes using traditional languages (Visual Basic, C++) or fourth-generation languages (4GLs).

How does ParaGrafix™ interact with my corporate data / business system?

ParaGrafix can read from and write to any ODBC compliant database. It can also read comma-delimited text files, INI files, and environment variables. If the database used by your Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system is ODBC compliant, you can read the system's customer stock code, pricing, inventory tables, for example. In addition, ParaGrafix/Frontline has already been linked to a number of ERP systems, providing linkage to the estimate and order entry modules. ParaGrafix's open architecture allows it to easily interact directly with any ERP vendor.

Does ParaGrafix™ interact with my CAD system?

ParaGrafix writes industry standard DXF files. You can export any or all objects in any combination to DXF files and import them as entire drawings or as components to existing drawings. Graphical objects can also be exported in Bitmap (BMP) or GIF format.

Does ParaGrafix™ interact with my existing software?

ParaGrafix also has the ability to interact with any standard Windows Dynamic Link Library (DLL). DLLs can be used to establish links with existing software or write specialized functions.
    Back to Questions

Can ParaGrafix™ interact with my UNIX server?

Yes. ParaGrafix can read/write data on a UNIX server, provided that there are ODBC drivers for the database. In addition, ParaGrafix has a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) component that can transfer files generated by ParaGrafix to any UNIX FTP site.

    What is ParaWeb™ Software?

ParaWeb brings Frontline functionality directly out to the Internet. This enables your customers, dealers, buyers, agents, etc. to do their own quotes or product configurations online. ParaWeb is an NT Server application that works with any standard Web server (Netscape, Microsoft, etc. ). ParaWeb is installed as an NT service.
    Back to Questions

What do I have to do to deploy a ParaWeb™ server?

You first must make a decision whether you want to host the Web site internally or have it hosted by an external organization such as an Internet Service Provider (ISP). In general, ISPs are somewhat reluctant, for security reasons, to allow customer or third party applications to reside on their Web servers, so they must be willing to allow ParaWeb to be installed. If you go with an ISP, it is simply a matter of installing ParaWeb on the ISP's server(s) and then installing your ParaWeb applications. If you want to run your own server, you will require the following:

    • Windows NT 4.0
    • Web server
    • Firewall (recommended )
    • Internet connection
    • Pentium system with at least 32MB ram, 4GB hard disk space

    Back to Questions
What do I have to do to deploy a ParaWeb™ application?

ParaWeb automatically reads any application developed by ParaGrafix, so you can use application files developed for desktop Frontline with little or no modification. All you need to do is write some HTML pages with input forms, some output HTML templates, and a simple script detailing what output (DXF, GIF files, etc. ) should be generated.
